Firefox 1.0+ to 1.5 RC1 DIY Upgrade

A great number of Firefox users, particularly enthusiasts and power users, have been making the transition from 1.0.7 to the (beta) release client, v1.5. Frequently, users are encountering extension compatibility issues due to the authors of various extensions failing to test and update their software for the new versions.

Fortunately, many of these "incompatible" extensions are in fact quite compatible, with a tiny bit of effort.

It first must be noted that extension installation files, like those obtained through the Mozilla extensions site, are ZIP files, with a different file extension (.xpi).

To upgrade your extensions, under Windows:

1. First, download the .xpi installation file for the incompatible extension.
2. Change the file extension to .zip (you may have to disable "hide extensions for known file types" in Windows Explorer, if you haven't already.
3. Extract the .zip file with your application of choice.
4. Using Notepad, open install.rdf.
5. Search for maxversion and replace the corresponding value with "1.6" (For instance, if the maxversion tag has a value of 1.0, we will replace it with 1.6).
6. Save the file and recompress the archive. Rename the file once again, replacing .zip with .xpi.
7. In Firefox, use the Open File (under the file menu) to open the installation file.
8. Enjoy!

friday is the new thursday

i believe that i have neglected the blog in favor of myspace and the forum; matt's post count is about to lap my own, so something must be done.

this guy was arrested for going into a tube station and acting like, well, me - flipping through his backpack, texting from his phone, pulling out a backpack. also, he was wearing a raincoat, which was evidently suspicious, despite the fact that it's fucking london, where you're lucky if it only rains once a day. it seems that the jolly uk is experiencing some rights-infringing jitters akin to our own government's behavior a few years ago...
